Start-up Support

There are many places to get business Start Up advice including banks, accountants, friends and relatives. There are a plethora of consultants who will offer you advice and assistance on a fee paying basis. However in the North Midlands there is also a publicly funded (and therefore largely free) source of high quality business Start Up advice which has built in local knowledge and a strong track record of success. This is delivered through our two county based Enterprise Agencies:

  • North Derbyshire: Derby and Derbyshire Business Venture (DDBV)
  • North Nottinghamshire: Nottinghamshire Business Venture (NBV)

The two Enterprise Agencies, funded through Business Link, the Alliance SSP and the European Regional Development Fund are there to help you with the challenge (and thrill!) of starting a new business, and to help you through those exciting but sometimes difficult early years, so giving you a better chance of success. As they are heavily subsidised their services are either free or available at a highly attractive rate.

DDBV and NBV both offer advice from fully qualified business advisers, where you can explore your business ideas, talk through any concerns you have, and then decide on a plan of action to make your business ideas work. Many of these business advisers also run their own businesses or have run businesses in the past, so they know what you will be going through and what threats and opportunities you need to look out for. You may also decide to attend some of the related training courses they offer which include Business Planning, Bookkeeping, Effective Marketing, Tax, and Effective Use of IT.
