History
There has been a settlement in Ashfield since Saxon times and it is believed Ashfield got its name as the geological area favours trees, such as the 'ash' tree. The famous poet Lord Byron is buried at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Hucknall and his daughter Ada, Countess of Lovelace, who is buried beside him, worked with Charles Babbage and wrote the first ever computer programme. Kirkby-in-Ashfield started as a Danish settlement and is mentioned as Chirchebi in the Doomsday Book and recorded as having a church, a priest and two mills. Sutton has had a settlement since Saxon times and the Saxon suffix 'ton' meaning 'an enclosure or fenced in clearing'.
